England beat India by six wickets

Pietersen, who missed the visitors' last ODI because of a fractured left thumb, returned in style with a match-winning knock that came off 39 balls as England chased down India's modest 121-run target with eight balls to spare.

After being dropped on one by Suresh Raina, Pietersen hit five boundaries and three sixes en route his quickfire innings as the reigning T20 champions proved their supremacy in the shortest format of the game.

Samit Patel was the second-best run-maker for England with a 25-ball 21, while Ravi Bopara remained unbeaten on 14.

Earlier, India produced an ordinary batting performance to be restricted to 120 for nine.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's decision to bat first at a slowish Eden Gardens pitch backfired as barring Suresh Raina (39) and the skipper (21) himself, no other batsmen could post a challenge before the determined English attack.

Virat Kolhi and Manoj Tiwary made identical 15 and towards the end R Ashwin (17) played a short-little cameo to help the home team's cause.
Right-arm pacer Steven Finn, who impressed in the just-concluded ODI series, was the pick of the English bowlers with figures of three for 22, while Tim Bresnan (2/19) and part-timer Ravi Bopara (2/16) gave him the perfect support from the other end.

England, however, did not have the best of the starts while chasing against an all-spin Indian attack.

Ashwin and Pathan managed to hold the England openers but it was left-arm spinner Jadeja who gave the first breakthrough removing Kieswetter for 12 to give some ray of hope to the Indians.

England could have been further trouble if not for otherwise an agile Raina, who dropped Pietersen in the next over with the star batsman on one.

Three Indian fielders chased for Pietersen's top-edge that came from Ashwin's bowling and in the end Raina went for it, only to put it down, in what appeared to be the turning point of the match.
Pathan dismissed the other opener Alex Hales (11) but Pietersen grew in stature, unperturbed of what's happening around him.

After a cautious start, Pietersen opened up with some good blows against Pathan as he stitched a decisive third wicket 60-run partnership with Samit Patel.

The duo completed 50 runs together from 36 balls as the target looked within reach.

Pietersen completed his half-century from 34 balls with three sixes and five boundaries before he was adjudged leg before wicket to Raina, 15 runs short of the target.

But from there on victory was just a formality as Bopara and Jonny Bairstow (2 not out) ensured that there was no further damage and gave England its first win in the tour.

Earlier, India witnessed a disastrous start losing both the openers cheaply. Having waited in the sidelines for more than three years,

Robin Uthappa's comeback match turned out to be a nightmare as, sent in as an opener, he could manage only one.

Uthappa's opening partner, Ajinkya Rahane , who shone with the bat in England as well as in the ODI series at home, too did not last long and fell for a duck.

Uthappa was caught unaware by a rising Bresnan delivery, while Mumbai youngster Rahane disappointed with a poor shot selection against Finn as both were dismissed caught behind.

In need of a partnership with the scorecard reading five for two, in-form Kohli looked in fine nick as he began the repair work with vice-captain Raina.

Kohli, who was the Indian top-scorer in the ODI series against England, looked in an ominous mood before Bresnan cut short his innings, brilliantly caught by a running Hales.

But Raina in debutant Tiwary's company then started to resurrect the Indian innings with a 40-run fourth wicket stand before the former was cleaned up by left-arm spinner Patel.

Finn then removed Raina and scalped Jadeja in two successive leave tottering at 74 for six.

India once again banked on Dhoni to marshal the sinking ship, but the captain became a mute spectator when Bopara took two wickets in the form of Pathan (10) and Praveen to add to the home team's misery.

At 91 for eight, India looked in danger of being bowled inside 100, but R Ashwin (17) played a nice cameo in Dhoni's company to take the score to the 120-mark.

All eyes on India as F1 takes a pit stop in the country

Noida, Oct 27: India's image as a growing sports superpower will be put to test when it hosts the first ever Formula One Grand Prix beginning with the free practice session on Friday, Oct 28 where racing afficanados will get the first feel of the high-speed action set for Sunday.

Amid the Sebastian Vettels and Lewis Hamiltons, the racers of home team, Sahara Force India, would look to score points to make the country's entry into the glamorous world of F1 a memorable one. The action begins with the free practice session on Friday, followed by the qualifying on Saturday before the race.

Son of the soil Narain Karthikeyan will realise the dream of his life when he will run the Hispania car on the track of brand new Buddh International Circuit but Karun Chandhok is not that lucky as Team Lotus has not given him a racing seat.

Chandhok has no choice but to be content with driving during the practice session tomorrow. Like any shrewd business group, Team Lotus put business over emotions and decided to stick with regular drivers Heikki Kovalainen and Jarno Trulli as they aim to finish 10th ahead of fellow newcomers Hispania and Virgin.

A 10th place finish would mean receiving close to USD 30 million as revenue from FIA, so Team Principal Tony Fernandes did not hesitate in making an unpopular decision. "Driving in front of the home crowd cheering on is going to be a surreal experience. A once in a lifetime experience and I feel extremely fortunate. There is a huge buzz around the Grand Prix already and I'm sure that it'll be a resounding success that will motivate more youngsters towards the sport and give us the future F1 drivers," Karthikeyan said.

Real punish Lyon 4-0 in Champions League

Arsanal

Real Madrid powered to a compelling 4-0 Champions League win over Lyon after a top display at the Bernabeu.Karim Benzema head the opening goal in the 18th minute before Sami Khedira added the second just after the break. An own goal by Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris gave Real a commanding lead before Sergio Ramos hammered home the fourth nine minutes before the final whistle.

The result keeps Real firmly at the top of Group D with three wins from three, while Lyon, who had not conceded a goal in their European campaign going into the game, are now level on points with Ajax who beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0.

Lyon went close when Jimmy Briand dragged his shot wide of the far post after shrugging off Marcelo in one of Lyon's best chances of the first half before Bafetimbi Gomis looked to have levelled the score with a well taken volley, but he was flagged offside.

Champions league

Real had a goal disallowed on the half-hour when Xabi Alonso took a free-kick too soon and earned himself a yellow card in the process.Alonso re-took the free-kick and Hugo Lloris showed why he is the French number one with a fantastic save to deny Real Madrid a second as Lyon's defence held firm.

Ozil then engineered Real's third score in the 55th minute. Benzema linked up well with Marcelo who freed Ozil in the area. The striker tried to squeeze his shot under Lloris but the goalkeeper made a mistake and the ball crept over the line.

Ronaldo had a goal disallowed when Kaka strayed offside but Ramos made it four when he lashed the ball into the back of the net from Kaka's corner 10 minutes later.

F1 World shocked by Wheldon's death

Wheldon

British IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon has died following a huge accident at the Las Vegas Indy 300. After drinking in Red Bull’s title success in Korea, formula one awoke on Monday morning to terrible news from the world’s other premier single seater series.

(L to R): Second placed Nicolas Kiesa, race winner Jenson Button third placed Dan Wheldon on the Silverstone podium after a Slick 50 Formula Ford Championship race in 1998.

33-year-old Dan Wheldon, the 2005 Indycar champion and two-time Indy 500 winner, was killed on Sunday during the American category’s 2011 finale at Las Vegas speedway. The Buckinghamshire-born star, 33, was one of 15 drivers involved in a crash at the second corner on lap 13 of the season-ending race.Wheldon, who began IndyCar racing in 2002, was series champion in 2005 and won the Indy 500 in 2005 and 2011.

Given his nationality and his earlier links with a possible move to Formula 1, the Briton was well-known in the F1 paddock and well respected by many of the current drivers in the F1 field.

Lewis Hamilton, 2008 Formula 1 world champion,  said: "This is a tragic loss at such a young age."

He added: "He was an extremely talented driver. As a British guy, who not only went over to the States but who twice won the Indy 500, he was an inspirational guy and someone that every racing driver looked up to with respect and admiration.
